Thermowell lid

Hi,
Does any one know why a thermowell lid would sound and feel like it is full of sand. The one I got with my model C is light, the bottom has a couple holes in it and I can see the rock wool. The one I bought has a speckled white and blue bottom (mine is just aluminum) is four times heavier than mine and it sounds as though there is sand in it when you shake it.
If anyone can help, we would appreciate it.

Hello Dana,
If the one you bought is an old one, there are several reasons. If the previous owner washed the lid in the sink or put it through the dishwasher, the internal part of the lid has rusted and you are hearing rust particles rattleing inside. Or, someone has left the Well burner on too long and the Rockwool has melted into little beads of minerals.
The speckled black/blue and white finish is correct for late models of ranges.
Now, If you have bought a new reproducton lid, call the seller and ask him why it rattles. The reproductions I have seen are of good quality and do not rattle.
